Our Mission: We, the Kauaibots, aim to inspire today’s youth to develop interests in becoming future leaders in the fields of science and technology. By engaging them in this mentorship-based program, we strive to enable and facilitate learning about a variety of professional fields, inspire innovation, and foster an environment that allows them to explore their interests.

By uniting all of the Garden Isle’s High Schools into one team, we are able to engage communities across our island, bringing us together, and strengthening our bonds. We are committed to supporting students no matter their age, by providing more accessible, and hands-on learning. So come and be inspired with us! We can’t wait to welcome you to our team!

What is FIRST Robotics? The FIRST robotics program is one of the best vocational training initiatives found in schools today. The label “robotics” doesn’t do the program justice, as lessons learned span far beyond the technicalities of building a robot, preparing students for success in every aspect of their lives imaginable. Our program not only challenges students academically, but also provides a safe space for growth, both mentally and emotionally. FIRST fosters an environment where students are inspired to reach higher, recognized for accomplishments, and reminded of the possibilities lie ahead.

Each year, high school students across the world are given the task of designing, building, and programming large robots to complete challenges designed by creators of the FIRST program. Oh, and we only have 6 weeks to do it!!! Students, mentors, families, and community members come together during this building season, to prepare themselves for their respective regional competitions following the build season.

Why participate in FIRST? We believe that FIRST Robotics is the single best program to develop problem solving, teamwork, mechanical and technological skills for students. The skills learned in this program will support our students with their education as well as in their careers and as community members. By providing an opportunity to participate in FIRST, we believe we are creating the future leaders of the high tech workforce for the County of Kauai, and the State of Hawaii.

Recently, Hawaii’s high tech companies have found a shortage of qualified workers living in Hawaii and have resorted to hiring people from the mainland. Relocation is expensive and difficult and local companies would love to be able to hire locally. Such jobs are some of the best paying jobs for recent college graduates, which offer opportunities for our kama’aina, or local residents, to successfully afford to remain or return to Hawaii, with the high cost of living.

By exposing Hawaii’s youth to technology and engineering through FIRST Robotics and supporting education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics we are helping to create opportunities here on our island for our youth.

“The varsity sport for the mind,” Kauaibots, Kauai’s FIRST Robotics Competition team, combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of high school students and their mentors are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team, and support our students for their future endeavors.
